Check these other tips to help you save money:
- Get your oil tank and system serviced so you know it’s in top condition and you are not wasting any valuable oil.
- A serviced boiler runs more efficiently and is less likely to break down.
- We are always very careful to get our car serviced so get your boiler serviced too.
- Studies backed by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland say old boilers are wasteful.
- If your boiler is more than 20 years old you need to consider a newer model. An investment will pay for itself in time to come. Newer models reduce the carbon footprint and use less fuel.
- Turn down the thermostat at night and when you are away from home; even slightly lowering your thermostat during the day may save you up to two percent on your heating bill.
- Stop heat loss by eliminating any gaps between your door and threshold. Use a seal that can be attached to the bottom of the door – it should brush up against the threshold to fill any gap.
- Caulk or re-caulk exterior spaces between the windows and walls of your home.
- Close your kitchen vent, fireplace damper and closet doors, and remove, cover or close air conditioning units and vents when not in use.
- Make sure exterior walls, ceilings with cold spaces above, and floors with cold spaces below are all well insulated.
- Install and close storm windows. Consider new glass designed to decrease radiant heat loss without lowering visibility.
